Garage Door Off Track? Off-Track Door Repair in Atlanta

A garage door that has come off its track is heavy, unstable and can fall. Leave it where it is and call us. Our experienced technicians find out why it came off, whether a cable, a roller, a bent track or a spring, and put it back on track safely.

Safety first: with a door off its track, don't try to lift it or force it back, don't run the opener, and don't pull the red release cord if the door is open or partly open; it can crash down. Keep everyone, kids and pets included, clear of the door and call (470) 257-7192.

Right Now

My garage door came off the track: what should I do?

Leave the door exactly where it is. Don't press the opener button again, don't try to lift it or push it back, and don't pull the red release cord while the door is open or partly open; it can crash down. Keep kids, pets and cars away, and call (470) 257-7192. Our phones are answered 24/7.

Do

  • Leave it where it is, whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway.
  • Keep everyone clear, kids and pets included, and keep cars out of the way.
  • Leave the opener alone. Ask everyone at home not to touch the remote, keypad or wall button. Unplug the opener only if you can get to the plug without standing under the door or reaching near the springs.
  • Call (470) 257-7192. Tell us if your car is trapped or the door won't close for the night. More on 24/7 emergency garage door repair.

Don't

  • Don't lift, push or pull the door to get it back into the track.
  • Don't run the opener, not even once to see if it still works.
  • Don't pull the red release cord while the door is open or partly open; with a broken spring or cable it can crash down.
  • Don't touch the springs, cables or track bolts, and don't hammer the track.
  • Don't drive or walk under the door while it hangs crooked.

Know The Signs

What are the signs a garage door is off track, or about to be?

A door that has come off its track usually hangs crooked, sits higher on one side or stops halfway, and you may see a roller outside the metal track. Grinding or scraping, or a gap opening at the side, often comes first. Any of these is a reason to stop using the door and call.

  • Crooked or higher on one side. The bottom of the door isn't level with the floor, or one side hangs lower than the other. Why that happens.
  • Rollers out of the track. One or more of the small wheels along the door's edges sits outside the metal track instead of inside it.
  • A gap at the side. The edge of the door has pulled away from the track, or the track has pulled away from the wall.
  • Grinding or scraping. Metal rubbing on metal as the door moves often means a roller is catching or the track is bent.
  • Stuck halfway. The door stops partway, jams, or goes up crooked and won't come back down.

Door won't open or close, and none of these fit? Our troubleshooting guide, why won't my garage door open or close?, covers the other common causes.

One Side Lower

Why is my garage door crooked or higher on one side?

Usually because one side has lost its lift. The most common causes are a lift cable that has snapped or slipped off its drum, a broken spring, or rollers that have come out of the track on the low side. Stop using the opener, leave the door where it is, and call (470) 257-7192.

With one side unsupported, the door can twist further out of its tracks or drop without warning. If your door has extension springs (long springs that run beside the ceiling tracks), one broken spring often looks exactly like this.

Common Causes

What usually knocks a garage door off its track?

The usual causes are a bump from a car, a broken lift cable, worn rollers, a bent track, loose track brackets, something in the door's path, or a broken spring. Two of these often happen together, so we check the whole door, not just the spot where it came out.

  • A bump from a car. Backing into a door that isn't fully open, or clipping the track, bends the metal and pushes the rollers out.
  • A broken cable. When one lift cable snaps or comes off its drum, that side drops and the door twists out of its tracks.
  • Worn rollers. Cracked wheels and worn bearings wobble and bind, and a roller can jump out of the track.
  • A bent track. A dent or kink catches each roller as it passes, until one pops out.
  • Loose brackets. When the brackets that hold the track to the wall work loose, the track drifts away from the door.
  • Something in the way. If the door closes on a bin, a bike or the car and keeps pushing, it can twist out of its tracks.
  • A broken spring. Without the spring the door is suddenly far too heavy, and an opener straining against it can pull the door crooked.

Please Read First

Why shouldn't I force the door back on its track myself?

Because a door off its track is heavy and no longer guided. Most home garage doors weigh well over 100 pounds, and their springs and cables are under tension. Push or lift it while it's out of the tracks and it can drop, swing or fold without warning. If a cable or spring has failed too, nothing holds that side up.

  • Springs and cables are not DIY parts. Working near them without the right tools and experience can cause serious injury.
  • It usually makes the repair bigger. Forcing the door, or running the opener against it, bends panels and track, and can turn a repair into a replacement.
  • The cause is still there. Even if the rollers go back in, whatever pushed them out, such as a frayed cable, a bent section or a loose bracket, can knock the door off again, sometimes with someone underneath.

Leave it where it is, keep everyone clear and call (470) 257-7192.

Bent Tracks

Can a bent garage door track be repaired?

Often, yes. A track with a small dent or bend can usually be straightened and realigned, while a section that is kinked, creased or twisted is replaced. The technician checks both tracks on site and tells you which yours needs, with a free written price before any work starts.

Because a bent track is also a common reason doors come off, we check the brackets and rollers at the same time. Please don't try to hammer a track straight yourself, especially with the door still in it.

Is It Urgent?

Door off track: fix now or can it wait?

If the door is off its track, crooked, stuck partly open or hanging by a cable, it needs fixing now: don't use it, and call. If it still runs level without catching, and the only problem is noisy or wobbly rollers, it can usually wait a few days for a booked visit. Stop using it if anything changes.

Pricing

What affects the cost of fixing an off-track garage door?

The price depends on what knocked the door off and what was damaged on the way, from a single roller out of the track to bent track sections, a snapped cable or a broken spring. The size and weight of the door matter too, because a heavy double door is more work than a light single one.

We check all of it on site, then give you a free, exact, written quote โ€” and you approve that price before any work starts. For the bigger picture, see our guide to garage door repair cost in Atlanta.

    Other failed parts

Frequently Asked Questions

My garage door is out of balance. What does that mean?

It means the springs no longer carry the door's weight the way they should, so the opener ends up doing the lifting. Signs include an opener that strains or slows down, a door that feels heavier than it used to, or one side sitting lower. Left that way, the door can bind and come off its track. Please don't adjust the springs yourself; call (470) 257-7192.

How much does it cost to fix an off-track garage door?

It depends on what knocked the door off and what it damaged: a roller out of the track, bent track sections, a snapped cable or a broken spring, plus the door's size and weight. We check all of it on site, then give you a free, exact, written quote โ€” and you approve that price before any work starts.

Can I push my garage door back on the track myself?

Please don't. Getting the rollers back in means holding the weight of a door that is no longer guided, next to springs and cables under tension, and it can drop or twist while you work. Whatever knocked it off is usually still there, too. Leave it where it is and call (470) 257-7192.

Can I still use my garage door if it's only slightly off track?

No. Even one roller out of the track leaves that side unguided, and each run of the opener can pull the door further out, bend the track or crease a panel. Leave it where it is, closed if it's already closed, and call. Caught early, it's usually a smaller repair.

Will my garage door come off track again?

Usually not, once the cause is fixed. We don't just put the rollers back: we find what knocked the door off, such as a frayed cable, a bent track section, worn rollers or loose brackets, and fix that too. A new bump from a car can still knock any door off its track.

Can you fix an off-track garage door in one visit?

Usually, yes. Most off-track repairs are finished on the first visit, because the common parts ride on the truck. Same-day service on most repairs; emergencies usually within about 2 hours. If a part has to be ordered, we make the door safe and secure the opening until we come back to finish.
